Two faculty members from the College of Engineering at the University of Basra received certificates of appreciation at NURAI 2026.

Lecturers Noor Hazem Abdul Wahab and Shireen Mohammed Ibrahim, from the College of Engineering, participated in the National University Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Applications Championship (NURAI 2026) with a research project in the field of community service.

The project, titled "The Smart Glove for Sign Language Translation," offers an innovative technological solution to the communication challenges faced by individuals with hearing and speech impairments. The smart glove, equipped with bending sensors, an MPU6050 sensor, and an ESP32 controller, translates sign language gestures into instantly understandable output. The project aims to provide a low-cost system that facilitates communication and enhances users' independence and social integration.

Lecturer Shireen Mohammed Ibrahim also participated in the NURAI 2026 competition. Nour Hazem Abdel Wahab presented a second project, titled "Real-Time Air Quality Mapping," as part of the aforementioned competition. This project addresses the limitations of traditional environmental monitoring methods, which rely on fixed monitoring stations and fail to reflect the spatial variations of pollutants. The project proposes a self-propelled robotic vehicle that collects air and wind quality data as it moves, producing accurate spatial maps. The solution is characterized by its low cost and scalability for various applications, such as pollution assessment, industrial emissions monitoring, and smart city planning. These two projects reflect the college's commitment to supporting student innovation in technical fields with societal and environmental impact.
