A PhD thesis by researcher Mays Ibrahim Hassan was defended at the Department of Civil Engineering, College of Engineering, University of Basrah. The research was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Naseh Ahmed Hamdan and Dr. Dina Ali Yassin, and was titled: Hydrological and Hydraulic Models toSimulate Flood Inundation in South of Ali Al Gharbi in Maysan Governorate
This thesis addressed the transformation of flash flood risks in the "Ali Al-Gharbi" basin, Maysan Governorate (2,945 km²), from a destructive threat into a strategic opportunity to enhance water security. An integrated engineering methodology was employed, combining Geographic Information Systems, remote sensing, and hydrological and hydraulic modeling. The results revealed a high potential for surface runoff in the area; the volume of wasted water during the April 2019 flood reached approximately 144.4 million cubic meters, while the model demonstrated high accuracy, exceeding 89%, in predicting flood behavior. The study proposed a strategic, 1.8-km gravity-fed channel requiring no pumping stations, designed to direct water toward the Tigris River. This offers a sustainable, low-cost model for converting flood disasters into a water reserve that supports irrigation and water security in semi-arid regions
