The College of Engineering at the University of Basrah Strengthens its Partnership with the Industrial Sector Through an Industrial Council Meeting

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the College of Engineering, University of Basrah, held its second Industrial Council meeting on Monday, April 20, 2025, in the department's council hall. The meeting was attended by council members from the academic community and representatives from industrial institutions.

The Head of the Department, Dr. Raad Jamal Jassim, opened the meeting by welcoming the attendees and emphasizing the importance of strengthening integration between the academic and industrial sectors. He stressed the need to translate this cooperation into practical steps that contribute to developing engineering education outcomes to meet the needs of the labor market.

The meeting addressed several strategic topics, most notably linking real-world industrial challenges to student projects. It was agreed that the college would be provided with a set of real-world industrial challenges to be developed as graduation projects for undergraduate and graduate students for the 2026-2027 academic year. This project will be supervised jointly by academics and engineers from industrial institutions.

The meeting also addressed mechanisms for developing summer training programs for students by assigning them clear practical tasks, requiring them to prepare comprehensive technical reports reflecting their practical experience, adopting standardized evaluation models in collaboration with companies, and working to transform training challenges into applicable graduation projects. It was also agreed to organize a competition for the best summer training reports, in coordination with the host institutions.

To further enhance the practical aspect of the program, the "Visiting Engineer" program was introduced. This program aims to host engineers from various institutions to deliver specialized lectures supported by real-world case studies, according to a regular annual schedule, thus contributing to the transfer of practical expertise to students.

The meeting concluded by emphasizing the importance of continuing to hold periodic meetings of the Industrial Council and following up on the implementation of recommendations. This will strengthen the effective partnership between the College of Engineering and the industrial sector and support the development of the educational and research process at the university.
