The College of Engineering, in cooperation with UNESCO, holds a symposium on reviving the architectural heritage of the city of Basra

The College of Engineering at the University of Basrah held a joint symposium between the Department of Architecture and UNESCO on reviving the architectural heritage of the city of Basra in the presence of Prof. Dr. Falah Hassan Shri, Dean of the College of Pharmacy, representing the President of the University of Basrah The symposium was presented by Engineer Qusai Al-Shamkhawi, Head of the UNESCO Team, Engineer Yasser Al-Jubouri, Field Coordinator, and Mr. Bilal Al-Hamayda, Education Department Officer at UNESCO. Professor Fabrice Tesla (Consultant). This symposium is a continuation of the previous steps within the framework of joint cooperation between the University of Basra and UNESCO - Iraq Branch - with the aim of reviving the architectural heritage of the city of Basra. During the symposium, the progress of the project being implemented by UNESCO in the ancient city of Basra, which has reached advanced stages, was reviewed. The techniques used in the restoration and the challenges that faced the project were clarified, in addition to a detailed explanation of the nature of the traditional building materials used in the maintenance and restoration work of the damaged buildings. It was also agreed to continue holding future seminars and exchange visits to consolidate the bonds of joint cooperation and to make the best use of the presence of UNESCO in the city due to its expertise in dealing with and rehabilitating heritage buildings. In addition to agreeing to develop a joint future action plan aimed at placing students in the work sites of the organization to provide them with the required expertise in architectural conservation work.
